Craft Product Review: Color Infusions Memory Thread from DMC

From the DMC website:

Go 3D with Color Infusions Memory Thread – Shape it. Tack it. You’re done.

Memory Thread is a soft fiber wrapped copper wire that you can use to embellish all types of needlework and craft projects. Memory Thread is colorfast, fade resistant and acid free. Memory Thread is available in 28 bright beautiful colors. The fiber is hand-wrapped on a recyclable shuttle to keep the thread tidy and ready to use. Notches on the shuttle hold the thread in place once in use. You can reuse the shuttle for other threads once you use all of your Memory Thread and the shuttles can be placed on a metal ring to keep all of your threads for a project together. Each shuttle contains 3 yards of Memory Thread.

So, now it’s confession time. I actually bought the two spindles of thread (above) a year ago because I wanted to give Memory Thread a try. I started the heart cross stitch and then put the whole thing away with the heart about 3/4 of the way finished.

For a YEAR!

Then the lovely people at DMC were part of the Innovations Showcase at Winter CHA 2013.

Which we covered in this post: CHA Hot 20 & Innovations Showcase Winter 2013 #CHAshow – Jenny’s Picks)

Color Infusions Memory Thread was included in the Hot 20 and I was given this super book and sample of Color Infusions at the event.

Which made me think it was time to break out the items I had purchased forever ago (in crafting time) and finish up my little project.

Here is the heart cross stitch worked from the pamphlet from DMC. It’s cute enough worked in this variegated thread. Right?

And here it is with the memory thread.

Here it is from the side to show the dimension.

The DMC website has a great video that shows how to use Memory Thread: How to Use Memory Thread.

And here is something I figured out for myself. I looked and looked all over the top of the shuttle for the end/beginning of the memory thread so I could begin to work with it.

The end/beginning is UNDER the shuttle and under the label. Just pick up the corner of the label and you should be able to pull it out pretty easily.

As for “Emma Broidery’s Memory Thread How-To Guide” – it is chock-full of great ideas for using memory tread as well as tips,  techniques and different stitches. A great resource if you are looking to add some fun to your needlework, quilting, jewelry and paper crafts.

From the back of the book:

“Learn everything you need to know about DMC’s Memory Thread™ – an innovative fiber wrapped wire that adds beautiful dimension, color and texture to all types of needlework and craft projects.

Emma created this comprehensive guide to show and explain how to shape and apply Memory Thread™ to fabric, canvas, felt, quilts and paper.

18 basic and creative shaping techniques are presented with instructive photos, directions, diagrams and helpful tips. “

If you want to be able to do more than lay Memory Thread on a surface and couch it down you really need this handy little guide.

I really enjoyed working with Color Infusions Memory Thread.I was afraid it would be easy to kink, knot and tangle but it’s not at all. I found it easy to shape with just my fingers and if I wanted to get fussy with the placement I only needed to nudge it in place with my fingernail.

If you create a design with Memory Thread and don’t like the placement or arrangement it is easy to straighten it back out again.

I’m looking forward to playing with Memory Thread some more.

You can see what I created with the heart sample over on The Creative Goddess Blog here: Toolbox Tuesday: Color Infusions Memory Thread from DMC.
