The Lost Tooth Necklace

January 25, 2012

So, this story is cute or creepy, depending on your perspective. Last week, my little girl lost her front tooth. This is a picture I snapped right after it came out:

{Photo altered with the Lo-Mob app for iPhone}

She was, as you can imagine, super-excited for the tooth fairy to come. So excited, in fact, that she carried her tooth around for the rest of the night.

And lost it.

Yup, when the time came, the tooth was AWOL and she had to write a letter to the Tooth Fairy and explain the situation. (Fortunately, our Tooth Fairy is super-cool like that and still left a note, golden dollars, and a crapload of fairydust.) But I digress.

A few days later, little girl was cleaning her room and actually FOUND the aforementioned lost tooth. And she asked if she could keep it.

“Sure.” I said.

“Can you make it into a necklace for me to wear to school?”

“Um, sure.” I responded. Famous last words. So I decided to cast her tooth in resin so that a) she’d be less likely to lose it again and b) it would be less likely to gross everyone out.

I used Ice Resin and some gold leafing, and came up with this:

I kinda think it looks like a heart.

I glued on a bail, and now it’s jewelry.

Gross or cool?

    Totally cool! I remember when I found a keepsake jar of my baby teeth my mom had kept (she told me that the tooth fairy returns the teeth to moms that ask LOL! ) It seems like an awesome idea not just for ur daughter but also for moms & scrapbook/baby books or even to make a “tooth box” for kids to safely keep their teeth for the tooth fairy to pick up.

    I agree- I might have been a wee-bit weirded out if it were real (which surprises me actually, I didn’t think something like that would bug me) but I love what you did and it definitely looks like a heart which is really cool.

    I think it’s cool! I did a similar thing for a mom who saw the tooth as a bittersweet momento of her baby boy growing up.
