Darice Hole Reamer
I have quite a few of these little metal awls (hole reamers, piercing tools) in my studio. I use them for lots of different purposes. This one can be found at Consumer Crafts and is only $1.47. It’s perfect for paper and lighter force applications as I have been known to bend the tip.
But hey, I’m a crafter. Most of the time I only need a lighter weight tool. Unless I need to break ice for an adult beverage that is! 🙂
- Making a dent in a piece of wood prior to drilling a hole.
- Clear out a seed bead that has gotten wedged in a larger bead
- Scribe lines in wet modeling paste, plaster or Encaustic paint
- Reaching into tight places – especially good for cleaning found objects up a little
- Piercing thin sheets of metal
- Opening new tubes of adhesives
- Putting a hole in drywall prior to pushing in a plastic anchor
- Pierce holes in paper for book binding or making layered paper art
- Score paper
- Pierce holes in heavy material prior to sewing together
Ok, I know there are other uses out there. What do you use your awl for? Feel free to share them in the comments below.

I wrap paper around it to make a paper bead. Nice tight center left to run string/wire through. Also good for lines/holes in clay–metal, resin, glass or poly. 🙂
Shelly says
I use mine to clean up a bit of glue or paint that has overflowed, and to push back adhesive or painters tape when I have taped out-of-bounds. 🙂

Funny thing…I just broke mine. Tip was crooked and as I banged it with hammer to straighten…it broke off the whole piece. Funnier still…it was my second broken awl!!!! hahahaha. Now have to buy another becuase it is indispensible!!! For all the tips above including Shelly’s!!!! NOw I am keeping the bottom piece becuase I hate throwing things awy and I will find a use for both bottoms one of these days!!! Will drop in my steampunk box of items.

Great uses Teri and Shelly!! I’ll have to do another post with an updated list some time. 🙂

Peggy, I’ve broken a couple too but tossed them out. You’re making me think I should have held on to them! 🙂
