There are a few crafting necessities that I think just might need to be staples in any crafter’s arsenal, Mod Podge being one of them. Plaid has recently launched a new product in their Mod Podge line: Mod Podge Sheer Tint. Basically, it’s the standard Mod Podge formula with different tints added in to give your projects a little extra color!
Here’s what the Plaid site has to say about the Mod Podge Sheer Tint:
Add a hint color to your Mod Podge projects with Sheer Colors. Featuring a trend right color palette, Sheer Colors enable you to add transparent hues to glass and other surfaces.
Of course, I wanted to see how each of the colors that I was sent to test out would look on a paper surface first. I started with a blank white piece of cardboard for each of the four colors I was testing out and attached three squares of identical scrapbook paper.
I applied a small portion of Sheer Tint on the blank space at the top and then across each of the squares, using a paint brush to spread it.
After the first coats were dry, I applied a second and third coat to the scrapbook papers. The bottle states that you can deepen the color with multiple layers of the Sheer Tint; I can see a difference for each shade, however subtle it may be. Here are the results for the four different colors I received:
The next test I did was to see how well the Sheer Tint actually works on glass. I started with two small empty candle votives that I had on hand. I added a fair amount of the tint to the inside of the first votive and swirled it until the entire inside surface was coated.
When it was completely coated, I placed it upside down as the directions stated. Here’s where it got tricky; I wasn’t sure exactly how long to leave it upside down. I moved it a few times to make sure that the extra Mod Podge Sheer Tint cleared out as it was supposed to.
While the pink votive was drying, I started on the other one. I applied the Mod Podge to the outside of the votive using a paint brush again.
When all was said and done, the thick coating of the Sheer Tint left a much darker color versus the tint brushed on the outside.
I wasn’t impressed with the coverage of the inside test votive though. I wanted a uniform look and that was definitely not what I had at the end.
I decided to try again to see if I could work out some of the kinks. This time, I left the jar upside down for a few days before flipping it right side up.
Twenty four hours later, the jar was ready and it looked much better. I think the key was to leave it alone for a good chunk of time (like, days worth of time) before turning it over to complete the drying process. Granted, there were still parts that weren’t completely evenly coated, but it was much better than my initial test.
Overall, I really enjoyed using the Mod Podge Sheer Tints. They definitely require a little trial and error to see what will work best for you and your specific type of crafting, but the end result is worth the extra effort. Plaid has even put together a handy FAQ PDF that can help answer a lot of the questions you may have.
I created a simple gift with the jar that could be used for just about any occasion and isn’t that just the best?!

Yet another great review. I initially thought this was an ADDITIVE for our modpodge, so I’m glad I read it completely. You have found yet another item I might HAVE to add to my crafting collection….I’m thinking of using it with stencils on my scrapbook pages???????
