Last month I speculated about the Pantone Color of the Year for 2014- a bloggy insider had basically assured us that it would be blue.
HA! Not so, my lovelies! Instead, the Color of the Year is Radiant Orchid!
Mmmmm.
I think I like it. There is a bit of pink and just a hint of grey in it…which almost makes it a neutral.
Would you like to read the press release I got?
“While the 2013 color of the year, PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®.“An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.”
“An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.”
Radiant Orchid for Fashion
Radiant Orchid’s rosy undertones radiate on the skin, producing a healthy glow when worn by both men and women. A dazzling attention-getter, Radiant Orchid permeated the runways during the spring 2014 fashion shows and is already making its way onto the red carpet. Fashion designers featured in the PANTONE Fashion Color Report Spring 2014, including Emerson by Jackie Fraser-Swan, Juicy Couture and Yoana Baraschi, are incorporating Radiant Orchid into their spring collections and variations of this hue will carry into men’s and women’s clothing and accessories throughout next year.
Radiant Orchid for Beauty
A modern and surprisingly versatile shade, Radiant Orchid enlivens the skin, making all who wear it feel more healthy and energetic. Blending both cool and warm undertones, purple is an appealing hue for distinctive combinations and flattering to many hair, eye and skin tones.
This multifaceted hue is seductive when combined with red and pairs well with its sister shades of lavender, purple and pink, which provides an assortment of lipstick and blush options. Radiant Orchid’s exuberance also acts as a brilliant finishing touch to nails.
Radiant Orchid for Interiors
Spruce up interior spaces by incorporating this eye-catching hue in paint, accent pieces and accessories. As adaptable as it is beautiful, Radiant Orchid complements olive and deeper hunter greens, and offers a gorgeous combination when paired with turquoise, teal and even light yellows.
Likewise, the vibrant color is sure to liven up neutrals including gray, beige and taupe. Uplifting and bold without being overpowering, Radiant Orchid reenergizes almost any color palette and provides a unifying element for diverse spaces.
So, ORCHID. I can certainly see it as a great color for jewelry and knitwear- but what about paper crafting?
I printed out the color on my Epson 2000 printer (great color resolution!) and scrounged around in my studio for some supplies. I found my old Stampin’ UP spots and there is a gorgeous Orchid Opulance color, as well as my Lilac Pearl Pen and some cardstock from Co’ordinations.
I pulled together a couple of cards.
So.. what do you think? Will Orchid creep into your crafting? Leave me a comment and weigh in!

I love purple, but this one is a little on the pink side. I would like more blue (or less pink), and I realize the true color probably doesn’t come through as well as it should on a computer screen, I don’t see gray.

So interesting, I am going to contrast completely with the previous comment and say that it has a bit too much gray in it for me. 🙂 it brings a great purple into a bit of a depression in my mind.

I think I agree with Mary Lee. I like the more regal deep purple rather than this. It seems to be having an identity crisis! The color of the year for last year was so much better…and I never got a chance to really use it! So I guess I will be a year behind and do emerald green.
And Nicole, yes I do see grey in it too, but also pink. That’s what I mean by identity crisis.

Orchid and purple are outside my comfort zone in crafting…which means I’ll likely give this a go. I like to push my limits.
Jen Barnett says
I think I like it as an accent rather than lots of it on a card. I really like the way you printed it off and matched to your supplies.

I posted yesterday but don’t see it… maybe I posted on your fb page instead. Anyway, YEY purple!!!!!!!!! This looks a lot like the color of my accent walls in my studio, which I was trying to match from a pillow that was ‘Dusty Lavender”. I ended up mixing 2 of my favorite paint colors from Benjamin Moore in order to achieve it. BTW, after seeing so many beautiful rooms done in Purple with Gray accents, I used 2 shades of gray (a light and very light) on my flooring. Five coats of paint later, white wainscoting, and my room is nearly done!

After making everything for my brother’s wedding…their colour was purple….I thought that I’d never want to see purple ever again. But I have to say…this colour is quite pretty. Purple certainly isn’t one of my favourite colours at all, in fact I avoid it when possible, lol. So you can imagine my face when my brother’s fiance told me they were having purple as their wedding colour, lol. But, I managed to struggle through, lol. I can definitely see the greyish hue to this colour. Lee x

I think it is a gorgeous color…I can’t wait to see all the ways this color gets used this next year!
Mary Katherine says
I just love this colour it has enough pink tones to make me happy since it is my favorite colour can wait to see how it get used in the following year.
Rebecca Ednie says
I can see myself wearing this colour and I have a less pink version as an accent colour in my family room complimenting the grey-green of my walls. But I was never a fan of orchid opulence ink because it was too bright so I may use this in a slightly softer version if it becomes available.

What a happy color. Love it! So many other colors will enhance this shade. My creative juices are working. Hmmm-wonder what pattern I’ll come up with using this Radiant Orchid??
