(Note: there is a District 9 spoiler here…but just a little one….) OK, it’s a Sunday, and I just have to have a little rant here. Recently I’ve seen both a movie and a TV show where crafty folk are getting a bad rap and are portrayed as simpletons or just crazy. (Well, I’ll admit to being a little crazy, but really people!) So my first example is Glee, a new Fox show about Glee club. The wife of the […]

Glow in the Dark Crafting -Volume 2
There were so many cool GITD items to talk about in yesterday’s post, I just couldn’t get to them all. So here’s another batch of glow-in-the-dark goodness for you! Thread, Floss, and Yarns I LOVE glow in the dard threads…all of my Halloween wall-hangings have quilted spiderwebs for quilting. You can also do rockin’ machine embroidery or monogramming with this cool thread, too. And it’s not just for Halloween anymore- with these sweet pastel colors, you can use it for […]
Crystal Crafter Hot Fix Tool Product Review
It goes without saying that I like a little bling in my world. Last year I was at the Sewing and Quilting Expo and pick up one of these cute hot-fix crystal-setters, made by Kandi Corp and sold as the Victoria Lynne Crystal Crafter. I finally broke it out of the box and kicked the tires, which for ME means trying it out on fabric, paper, plastic, and polymer clay. The bottom line is that it is a great price […]

Fun with Fabric Paper (Quick How-To)
I had my friend and artist Wendy Fedan over last Wednesday for some down-and-dirty art, making fabric paper. For those who don’t know, fabric paper is basically a collage based on fabric, and then layered with white glue and other paper, fabric, yarns, etc. Wendy and I sat in the sun and spent an hour making pieces. Here are a few that I made: So here’s the basic tutorial: (I got it from Cloth Paper Scissors awhile back.) Start with […]
Fabric Cones for Swap – Scrap Mania!
I impulsively signed up for a swap on my CPS Yahoo Group, making fabric cones. They are inspired by old-fashioned May-day cones. Back in the day, you’d make a little decorative cone from paper, fill it with small candies or flowers, and leave it on the doorknob of someone you admired or loved. So now they’ve grown up, and it’s an excuse for mixed-media craftistas everywhere to spend an exorbitant amount of time on a bit of frippery. Ours were […]
I Have Fairy Name
Ok, so I like fairies and all, but I’m not exactly a diehard fantasy chica. BUT, I thought this was cute…. and maybe it would inspire me to make a fairy of my own. Tag? Quilt? Doll? Not sure yet, but here’s my jumping off info: Your fairy is called Tangle Elfwitch She is a cheerful sprite. She lives at the bottom of tangled gardens and in hedgerows. She is only seen in the enchanted moment between sleep and waking. […]
Nana’s Got a Brand New Bag
Or tote, or purse. Whatever. For my Mom’s birthday, she asked me to make her one of these “boutique bags.” I’d purchased instructions from an e-bay seller, and made up one for myself as a sample. Mom selected two coordinating prints from the collections I’d bought from Keepsake Quilting, and I made a bag up for her in an afternoon. The bag has 3 pockets built in, and I use the really stiff Peltex 72 (fusible on both sides) for […]
Random Acts of Kindness, Continued….
So I’ve mentally committed to doing RAKs…Random Acts of Kindness for my CPS Yahoo group sisters. So far I’ve made bookmarks, altered bobbins, felt needle cases, and now I’m on to charm-y thingies. I just mailed out my April goodies, which consist of a hand-made paper bead w/ Chinese characters on them, Chinese coins, and red beads for good luck. I’m not sure what the recipients might do with them, but I figure they would be fun on an art […]
Recycling Sweaters into Cardigans
Ahh, spring is here and it’s time to put those sweaters away. Or is it? Maybe it’s seen it’s better days. Or your weight has changed, and it doesn’t fit like it used to. Or you’re just itching to go thrifting and engage in some Earth Day craftiness. Well, I’ve found an idea for you! Over at Erica Makes Stuff, she’s posted a step-by-step tutorial on refashioning your old sweater into a spiffy new cardigan. According to her, you only […]
Back From the Expo: Part Three of Three
So, the big show is done for now. I thought I’d share some pictures of my purchases, and a couple of closing thoughts. I got accosted by the NCN president and quilt show coordinator, Gini, for having a rollie cart. (Sorry, but when I came in at 8:20AM the “No Rolling Carts” sign hadn’t gone up yet.) She brusquely informed me that it was a safety issue, and a problem with insurance. So why were dogs allowed? No, Really. Not […]
Back from the Sewing Expo: Part Two of Three
Friday at the Expo started bright and early, and then went pretty much non-stop all day. This was the agenda: 7:30 AM: Up at the hotel, barely moving. I had gotten up at 4:30 AM and had a wicked time getting back to sleep. Wishing I could blow off my morning class… 8:30 AM: Quick shower and quicker breakfast later, I’m taking “Crocheted Flowers” from Megan at Stitch Cleveland. Except it’s not Megan, it’s Erica from River Colors Yarns. No […]
Back From the Sewing Expo: Part One of Three
Well, I’m back from the sewing expo and my head is swimming. I took four classes over 2 days this time, and a good time was had by all. My good friend Nicole made the trip up from Charlottesville, Va, and showed up to celebrate my birthday with some serious girl time. Three days of shopping, sewing, and girl talk. Whoopee! For those who’ve never been to the Expo, it’s a pretty gi-gundous show. It goes over 3 days and […]
Ricky Tims on CBS Sunday Morning
Just in case you missed Ricky Tims on CBS Sunday Morning, I’m hosting the clip here. His quilt designs are really phenomenal… which is impressive because he didn’t start quilting until he was 35! And he’s a musician. Sorry about the commercial- it’s part of the video. Enjoy the eye-candy!
Happiness is… Boxes From the Mailman!
My online shopping spree finally resulted in boxes arriving on my porch. Whoopie! So much fun! And from so many places…. The smallest box was my order from Prairie Craft. I’ve been experimenting with clear liquid clay mediums, and I hadn’t tried out Kato Liquid Polyclay yet. And you really can just order one thing, can you? I mean, don’t you have to make it worth your shipping? So I also got some “fabulous flakes”- (inclusions for faux dichro effects), […]
Political Crafting
Today is primary day in Ohio, and I’ve already gone and done my civic duty. While I was surfing around the other day, I ran across something that caught my attention: Crafters for Obama. Really. A crafty blogger named Rachel is trying for some grass-roots fundraising via crafting. (For more info on her, visit AverageJaneCrafter.) I was a little surprised at this… although I remember that long ago, women would voice their political opinions via their craft all the time… […]
Funky Fiber Fusion Cuff by Jenny – Kits and Blanks Now Available!
This is a cuff I made a while back….I used “thread snot” and free-motion quilting to create the cuff base, then beaded on top of it. I love it because it’s bold, it’s sparkly, and just a bit edgy, too. We’ve offered it at Grand River Beads, but I haven’t had any takers. So what’s a Craft Test Dummy to do? Well, inspiration struck last night during a windstorm-induced bout of insomnia. Make my own kits! So, I’m offering two […]
Sew on Thursday….Review of Craft Apple Mini Patchfolio Pattern
So, ok, originally the poem said, “MEND on Wednesday,” but what the heck. I pulled out my Mini Patchfolio pattern from Craft Apple, and got to work. The first dilemma was picking fabric. Yes, I have a 5-drawer chest filled with fabric in my sewing room. But upon closer inspection, I seem to have a bazillion mini-prints and solids, and very few focus fabrics. The other thing is that I rarely buy a line of fabrics… usually just a yard […]
Recycled Shirt Backpacks
So I’ve been visiting Martha Stewart’s Craft of the Day site, and today’s “Shirt Sack” I thought was worth sharing! Basically you take a man’s shirt and stitch in into a little backpack. True, it’s not a heavy-duty rucksack, but it would be a cute little tote. Here are my ideas for them: Add an iron-on applique or an initial to dress it up. Make it more “boy” appropriate by using a flannel shirt. Whip up a bunch of these, […]
Altered Art Bobbins
So, I’m still on my Random Act of Kindness crafting kick. Our dear moderator Diane reminded me that March is rapidly approaching, so I got a-thinkin’. My challenge to myself is to a) create a handmade item b) using what I’ve got in my studio c) can be duplicated a dozen or so times, and d) can be sent in an envelope requiring no extra postage! Really, quite a tall order, if you think about it. Now, I’ve made bookmarks […]
