Nuvo Creative Pens from Tonic Studios

March 2, 2017

Here’s another new goodie from Tonic Studios- alcohol markers! Nuvo Creative Pens are a non-refillable marker that have a wonderful ergonomic grip and some lovely bright colors. Let’s take a look in this video review and demo!

Nuvo Creative Pens are Alcohol-based markers from Tonic USA.

Disclosure: samples provided for review purposes; my review is based on my first-hand experience and use of the product, and the brand had no say in my review. Some links in this post are affiliate links and using them will incur no extra cost to you, but will help CTD offset the costs of free, unbiased reviews.

Here’s how the Nuvo Creative Pens are described on the Simon Says Stamp website*:

These dual tip pens provide an innovative and professional finish to a diverse range of projects. The smooth, contemporary feel of the pen is comfortable and easy to control. The broad tip produces a wide mark to fill larger areas, while the fine tip is ideal for the delicate details. These pens are made with an alcohol based ink to produce an effortlessly smooth color. This package contains three 5-3/4 inch long duel tip pens in assorted colors. Conforms to ASTM D4236. Comes in a variety of colors. Each sold separately. Imported.

These pens are dual-tipped, featuring a fine point for drawing/writing and a large chisel tip for filling in larger areas.

Chisel Tip

And the caps are also coordinated- small cap for the small bullet tip, while the larger cap for the chisel tip also has the color and number printed on it.

I find this to be SUPER helpful while I’m coloring- I know RIGHT AWAY which end I need to uncap.

Chisel end cap also has the color and number on it.

The tapered design is also very comfortable in the hand.  I have a “death grip” on my markers, so the smooth, oval-shaped barrel is ideal. And the oval shape also keeps Nuvo Creative Pens from rolling off of the table.

Now let’s get to the ink. I made a swatch of the 10 sets (30 colors) I have. (By the way, there are 36 colors total.)

As you can see with the swatches, I used two swipes for the darker swatch and one pass for the lighter. Like most alcohol-based markers, you can get a nice depth of color by going over the area multiple times- but of course, you also get bleed-through on the back of the paper. (But no pilling or paper degradation, the way you would with water-based markers.)

Swatches of 30 of the 36 colors. Metallics are on the lower right- copper, silver, and gold.

And here’s that video demo I promised:

So to sum up- Nuvo creative Pens are good alcohol-based markers with a nice (if somewhat limited) color range. And for under $2 each, that’s a pretty OK trade off! I love the design and color palette, and these would be a perfect choice for new colorists!
