A while back I got a request from a YouTube fan asking me to compare the Martha Stewart Crafts Deluxe Scoring Board and Paper Trimmer to another scoring/trimming tool. So of course I thought I should give this combo tool a once-over to see how it works.
Let’s take a look.
At first blush, it’s pretty impressive- it has a movable cutting arm, on-board tools, and envelope tool AND a bunch of easy-to-follow project templates .
Here’s how it’s described on the website:
This Martha Stewart Crafts Deluxe Scoring Board with Trimmer is the tool with convenience built in! Score flawless, crisp lines in seconds when creating invitations, envelopes, gift boxes and more. Lightweight and easily portable, the Deluxe Scoring Board features an envelope guide with a convenient storage slot, built in paper trimmer with replaceable blade, stylus for scoring and embossing, 17 step-by-step templates, and instruction booklet to help you create more than 40 projects.

The envelope tool slides into a slot on the side- and all of the measurements are printed right on it .

A ball stylus is included and snaps right in to this on-board storage area.

The tray at the top holds project templates. There is both English and Spanish sets.
However, once I started cutting paper, I started having difficulty. The paper trimming arm makes a horrible ratcheting sound- it’s both unpleasant and LOUD.
Then, there’s the issue with the cutting.
There is both an issue with the trimmer veering off of a straight line AND with snagging on the edge of the paper, causing rips!

Cardstock.
I tried other weights of paper, but it was the same across text-weight paper, cardstock, vellum, and printed paper.
I made you a video so you could see all of this in action. The video is about nine minutes- long for YouTube, I know- but I wanted to be as thorough as possible.
The only nice thing I can really say about the tool is that the envelope template is really handy… as long as you don’t use the paper trimmer on the tool to make it.

The roomy size is nice for cards that have 3D embellishments.
So for $39.99 USD, this tool is a total thumbs-down for me. Stick to the WRMK scoring and trimming board…. or better yet, invest in a GREAT paper cutter like the Fiskars Pro-Cision Rotary trimmer and use a separate scoring board. (The Martha Stewart one and the Scor-Pal are equally good.)
Crafters beware of this one!

Thanks Jenny for such a detailed review. I tend to avoid MS products in general but like the appearance of the off-white tools. Why are all other score tools the ugliest possible grey color? Well, it certainly seems that MS fancy gadgets and pretty appearance just wont cut the mustard. I will do without a scoreboard for awhile longer. I’ve made it this long! 25 years of stamping and card making.
Thanks Jenny! This is why I love your reviews. Just a good an honest review every time.
Thanks for the review. It is nice to know what is out there and how it works. Greatly appreciate all that you do!
Nice to know there’s yet another reason NOT to purchase MS products. You’ve gotta wonder about their product review teams. Thanks, but no thanks. I’ll stick with my Tonic guillotine trimmers and Scor-It boards (have both sizes; unfortunately they don’t seem to be made any longer -bummer).
Great review. You really showed us the problems this tool has. I just discovered the MISTI which is a stamp a ma jig. I had never seen it before. Have you ever reviewed it? This might be a winner. Here is a link:

Love your reviews, you do a great job!
Well I am sad to say that I made a big mistake buying this product & just as u said: it can’t cut & it’s LOUD! I do like the scoring part of the board but this is also the 1st score board I’ve ever used so seeing how using a score board simplifies projects and makes them much more pleasant to look at in the end I would gladly buy another score board. I say buy another, because I despise this monstrosity so much that I can barely stand the noise it makes & I’d get cleaner more precise cuts if I was using a spork to cut my craft projects!! What a horrible disappointment????
Hello, I know this was such a long time ago product review and recently just saw your youtube channel after purchasing mine a couple of months ago. I purchased it for my sister and she live in another country and I gave it to her as a gift. I thought everything is complete when i purchased it in the store but unfortunately she just got it coz it takes a while before she can get the package coming from here. I asked her how was it and she said it was nice for me to get her that but it is incomplete as it doesnt have the templates and instruction booklet to make other projects. I was very disappointed as I cannot return it coz she doesn’t live here and won’t be able to return it to the store. I was wondering if any of you can help me get a contact number for this particular product in order to give them my thoughts or maybe you guys can give me a copy of the 17 templates and instruction booklet. I would really appreciate it as there is nothing i can do for now. Hope anyone among you can give me an answer. Thank you so much and hope to hear from anyone among you. God Bless!!! 🙂
You really should contact the Martha Stewart Crafts division of EK Success and see if they can help. I returned this tool since I was so disappointed in it.
didn’t get instruction book with my Martha stewart deluxe scoring board with paper trimmer
Well that’s a bummer! Contact the company and ask for a replacement?
