Just when you think that Martha Stewart Crafts and Plaid can’t come up with anything new….well, they DO. Now there is Martha Stewart Crafts Decoupage Durable Gloss Finish!
Here’s how it’s described on the website:
Martha Stewart Crafts® Durable Decoupage Gloss Finish can be used on any surface such as glass, fabric, paper, metal and wood to create a lustrous finish. It dries hard, with no tack. For indoor and outdoor use. Top-rack dishwasher safe, water base and non-toxic.
On first blush, it looks a LOT like the decoupage medium we’re all used to.
Closer inspection reveals that it’s MUCH thinner- more like a heavy cream than a honey consistency. It is still white and opaque, and dries clear.
Of course, I created some swatches for you.
From top to bottom: Glossy cardstock with dye ink; textured cardstock; and cotton ribbon with a rub-on applied. The areas with the check mark have been decoupaged with Martha Stewart Crafts Decoupage Durable Gloss Finish.
Can you see the difference?
Decoupaged art journal page. Really minimal wrinkling, which I love, especially in my art journal!
Here is some kraft cardstock with a napkin decoupaged onto it and a chandelier crystal. Again, can you see the difference?
{{SPOILER ALERT: THIS IS A TRICK QUESTION!}}
OK, one more example.
Here’s that same napkin decoupaged over a candle. (Notice that you cannot even see the edge of the applique!)
The finish is nice and smooth, doesn’t hold brushstrokes, sinks in quickly and doesn’t darken the item you are decoupaging on. But here’s the thing: IT’S NOT GLOSSY.
To better show you, I created a review video. Take a look….
So, yes, it’s a very durable finish- that scratch test on the kraft cardstock is pretty convincing. And being able to write on it? Brilliant. But Gloss? No.
Maybe they mean “For glossy surfaces???” Perhaps. But calling it “Gloss Finish” is just plain misleading.
In the meantime, I did create a project with it- you’ll see the full tutorial sometime soon.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on it- and I’m happy to answer any questions. Leave a comment in the section below!

This is strange biut it is not the only case I know, I use Decopatch glue and sealer and it has the label in several languages, while in English it says it has a glossy finish, in Spanish it says it has a satin finish… it must be magical that it has a different finish depending on the language the user speaks, ha, ha (bad joke) because I am Spanish and the finish I obtain from the glue is satin, not matt, not glossy!
I watch everyone of your videos. I have subscribed and I love how you test everything within an inch of it’s life. Funny how dear ole’ Martha’s product says it’s glossy and it’s not!!! Should we tell her???? But it did a nice job on the candle, and I like that it’s not tacky and a bit thinner than most!!! Keep up the great work. Your so much fun to listen to and watch!!!
You Rock Jenny!!!!!
Tammy
I really enjoy how you always call them as you see them, Jenny! CTD is my go to place when I want fair info on products. Thank You!!!
Nice review! I am also scratching my head about the gloss part, as well as it not really sticking the paper to the plastic. Mod Podge would stick it well. Maybe because it is thicker, or stronger? Thank you for all your examples! Love your site!
I’d love it if you could update this review with how the finish feels once dry. I HATE how tacky modpodge feels and I’d only purchase this if it has a non/tacky feel once dry.
As I mentioned in the video, it dries completely non-tacky. Smooth with a satin finish.
Sorry. Hadn’t found time to watch the vid yet.
you are amazing! this site is AWESOME! i heard about it watching scrapsoup and totally bookmarked this! i will be spending far too much time catching up on all these reviews!
I’ve just found your site & it’s brilliant . Do you know is this product available in the UK ? Many thanks Pauline x
Pauline- you’ll have to contact Plaid, the company that makes the product, for distribution information. 🙂
Thank you Jenny , I’ll send them a message . I’ve tried to order from them but they don’t ship to Uk x
