I love magazines. Well, crafty ones, at least. Whether they are jewelry, clay, beads, fiber…. well, they all make me happy, and get my brain moving in new directions.
Yesterday I picked up a Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion. Her style is very “cutesy,” which really isn’t my thing. However, I do like her new fabrics and use of color.
Anyhoo, what made me buy the magazine was the project for making fabric slippers, using only fat quarters of fabric. I have fabric out the wazoo, so I thought I’d try whipping some up.
I first have to admit that I’m not so good with written directions… I’m more of a “show-and-tell” type of girl. But, I did get one completed in a NTI (nap time increment, for the childless), and I’m hoping to finish the other one tomorrow.
Note to self: they run a little small. Or my seam allowances or big. Whatever. But my first attempt will have to go to my sister, who has daintier feet. Oh, and second note to self. Don’t use small rick-rack. Stick to the bigger size. Or maybe stitch the rick rack on after the slippers are made, and just top-stitch it on. I can tell I’ll have to make a few pairs to refine my technique.
So, I have to say I love the magazine, and the online version, too, because the directions for the “Sole-ful Slippers” is right on the site! Yay for you…. you can try and make them for free!
