Halloween is one of my families favorite holidays…and this year it’s even a little more special because we have a foreign exchange student celebrating with us. (Did you know that Halloween and Trick-or-Treating has spread to Italy? Go figure.)
To get geared up, we put out some decorations and I whipped up this little photo frame using Martha Stewart Decoupage materials.
The stars of the show are the Multi-Surface Durable Gloss Finish and the Glow-In-The-Dark Finish. But I also used the new AMAZING Decoupage Papers from Martha Stewart Crafts. Look!
Those cute spooky eyeballs gave me ideas! I pulled out my MDF photo frame and gave it a quick base coat using Martha Stewart Metallic Craft Paints. I love the sheen that they have.
PS- if you haven’t read my review of the Durable Gloss Decoupage Finish, you should go do so. There are some important things you should know about it. Head on over and give it a quick read. I’ll wait for you right here.

Oh, you’re back! Great. Interesting, right? So now Let’s get to crafting!
I like to paint the sides and the back so that’s it has a nice finished look. Make sure you let it dry completely.
Then, I got to the decoupaging part! I used a liberal coat on the frame, and then added the decorative paper on top.
Add more decoupage on top of that, too. Also, you WILL get wrinkles. It’s par for the course. Smooth them out with your fingers or an old credit card.
Now, let that all dry and add an extra coat of Durable Gloss Finish if you like. Let it all thoroughly dry, and then trim off the paper hanging over the edges with a craft knife. (Do you know how much I love my Martha Stewart Utility Bone Folder??LOVE.)
Next, I decided to add an extra-spooky element by adding some of the Glow-In-The-Dark finish to the eyeballs. FUN!
Now, to add a little more fun, I used some Martha Stewart Adhesive Stencils and some Martha Stewart Glitter (natch) to add the Trick Or Treat Sentiment.
Oh, and can you believe I had those stickers (ALSO the Martha Stewart Line from EK Success) still in my stash from last year??
So by now you are asking, “why is it a countdown calendar??” Well, my crafty friends, here you go!
Just remove the backing from the photo, paint it with the Martha Stewart Chalkboard finish, and you have an instant surface to write on. Just save the glass for later, and after you’ve taking your Halloween pics you can pop one in and enjoy the frame for an extra week! It’s a two-fer. And you know how I LOVE two-fers!
I have a little confession- I just am NOT a good enough photographer to capture the glow-in-the-dark aspect really well- this is the best I could do.
But you have to trust me- it looks SUPER COOL. And the kids just love it!
