Today I’m sharing another section of my crafting studio- the infamous CLOSET! As I’ve mentioned before, my main workspace is in what was once a guest room on the third floor. This rockin’ closet was already there, just waiting to be filled with crafting goodies!
Because the closet is on the opposite wall of the crafting tables/workstations, I keep things in here that need to be accessible but not “handy,” if you know what I mean.
On the left, there is open shelves that hold my die-cutting machines, paper trimmers etc. The higher shelves hold old pictures, alterable items, andother things I don’t need frequently.
The center section holds all my painting and decoupaging supplies (notice that here are 6 bins of this kind of stuff!) I also have not one but TWO Xyron machines, and the refills in there, along with a hardware-store organizer that has little plastic ddrawers that hold my found objects. I keep them labeled so I can find metal bits, old puzzle pieces, and weird gew-gaws.
I also have a set of plastic shoeboxes that hold specific crafts. For example, one holds needle felting supplies, another quilling supplies, soap-making supplies, metal working items.
The hanging sweater organizers hold lighter items such as Foamies, floral supplies, sponges, and binding spines. I keep knitting looms and scrapbooking projects on the floor in suitcases.
So here my top tips for organizing a crafting closet:
- Keep the most-used and heaviest items at waist level to avoid injuries.
- Label, label, label.
- Re-assess your crafting habits every 6 months and move lesser-used items to higher shelves or to the back. If you haven’t used it in a year, consider donating or selling it.
- Keep like items together. Similarly, keep items that are frequently together in close proximity. For example, I keep my Angelina fibers close to my stamps because I frequently use those two together.
Feel free to ask questions about storage, and tomorrow I’ll share another crafty space in my studio and a some of my storage/organization solutions. Don’t forget CS4S2C part one here (it’s my Polymer Clay workstation).
In the meanwhile, make sure you go back and visit my “Crafty Legacy†post and enter to win a fabulous Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner– the drawing is coming up this Friday! (This drawing is closed.)
