Ever see a cool craft project and go, “I really want to make this cool crafty goodness, but DANG, it needs to go outside. I wish there was a Mod Podge for that!” Well, my dearies, the Mod Podge fairy has heeded your call and YES, there is a Mod Podge for that! Enter Mod Podge “Outdoor.”
Over the past few days I’ve written reviews of classic Mod Podge, Mod Podge Shimmer, and Mod Podge Glitter. Yes, indeed, there are many things that they ALL have in common:
- It’s a glue, a finish, and a sealer
- It has a mild, distinctive odor.
- Has a tendency to show brushmarks. This formulation a little more than most.
- Can be tacky to the touch when it dries. (But a quick coat of clear acrylic spray remedies this.)
- Non-toxic, safe for the kids.
- Works on any porous surface- paper, wood, cardboard, chipboard, fabric, cork, and more!
- Starts off opaque, but dries clear.
There is however a BIG difference with MP Outdoor- it’s the consistency. While the others are like a thick honey, Outdoor is like paste. Really. I picked up some on my paintbrush and tipped it to the side. It just hung there:
I decided to work on a “Welcome” plaque in honor of my hubs & my impending anniversary. I thought it would be cute outside the back door.
I started by using regular MP to layer the background paper (sheet music), and then layering the images and monogram (I’ll share a more fully realized step by step tutorial another day.) I added some Shimmer MP to the initial to make it….um….shimmery, and then got busy topcoating the whole shebang.
Like a mentioned, MPO is thick. Like, super-duper thick. I started with foam brush, but with all of the layers I needed to switch to a “good” acrylic brush and use a very light hand to avoid copious streaking.
I decided to do two good coats, and STILL ended up with brushstrokes. Not a biggie for me, but I just wanted you to know.
Also, another thing to be aware of: even after I’d let it dry for 24 hours, it still felt really tacky to the touch. (Sometimes this happens with regular MP, too.) So I busted out the Krylon triple-thick UV protecting spray, and gave it two light coats. Viola!!! Tacky feeling gone, and yet another protective coat against fading from the sun.
So here’s my final project:
Now, since I’ve just hung it up, I can’t tell you how it’ll take the weather- yet. But I promise I’ll follow up and let you know if it’s survived an Ohio winter!
So, I need to remind you again to check out PlaidOnline for more about the full Mod Podge line and it’s history. And of COURSE go holla at Amy of  ModPodgeRocks fame…she’s always got great projects especially featuring Mod Podge Outdoor. She’s generous, too- she’s sponsoring a GIVEAWAY!
Just leave a comment on this post telling us YOU would use Outdoor PM, and we’ll draw a lucky winner to receive some to try out! We’ll draw a name on Monday, 10/18/10. (And here’s a little insider tip- we’re giving Mod Podge goodies away all week!!! Come back every day for a chance to win!)

What would I do with Mod Podge Outdoor? Could I “steal” your idea? 🙂 That monogram is just too cool.
shelly rae wood says
I think I would make a collage with my collection of paint chips, sort of a bargello effect on a big hunk of whatever wood DH has lying around to jazz up the pool area. It is in serious need of some color! 🙂
Kelly Massman says
OH, I would make some seasonal outdoor decorations! First one would be for Christmas, I think!
Angela says
I love your welcome sign, that’s awesome. As for what I would do with MPO, I don’t know. I had no idea this existed and this post has gotten my brain turning in a bunch of different directions – wind chimes, decorated mailbox, tombstones for Halloween, and more. Awesome.
Dana says
I’d definitely make a wooden painted sign for our front porch! I also had no idea MP outdoor existed.
Susan Spiers says
This would be a perfect finish for my outdoor wallpaper trim I purchased to put on my backporch! My husband said the trim wouldn’rt stay, but he doesn’t know about outdoor Mod Podge!
Mina says
Oh wow. 🙂 I’d use outdoor MP on a project that I’ve been thinking about for years, but that I never tackled… a personalized mailbox for our household. Our current mailbox just looks soooo drab. I’d use LOTS of colours on it, and make it pop in every which way possible, so that both we and our mailman will enjoy it more!
Betsy J says
AHHHHHH. Once again, nto available in my humble part of the country. I saw a tutorial for mod podge’d shoes that used outdoor podge that I would LOVE to try! Pretty please…?
Lindy says
This would come in very handy for a pumpkin we made out of plywood. I would love to try it. TFS.
Kory says
I’ve really been wanting to try the MPO. I am a huge MP fan so it seems logical that I would love this stuff too! The first thing I would do with it is to make some fun decorations for Halloween and then Thanksgiving and Christmas! Tis the season to decorate!
Stacie says
I would probably steal your idea too! I would love to do a family name type of thing for outside.
Rebecca says
I would probably use this in a frame that I was planning on redoing and adding our house numbers on top of for the front door.
Kimmy says
I am new to modpodge and love it. I have been looking for outdoor modpodge can not find any in my town. I would probley use it to cover some tiles with the bus numbers for my school. it is hard to put paper signs when it is windy. Thank you for the info
Mari says
I have been wanting to make a sign with our house number on it. Outdoor mod podge would be great for that!
Cath says
I was just out in the garden today, until it started raining, and thinking I’d like to have permanent labels for my perennials. Then I would know what’s in what pot, and where the plants are in the ground, come spring. I’m wondering if this would do the trick on some little plant labels. Worth a try.
Lisa says
I am a 2nd grade teacher and I use Mod Podge for EVERYTHING! From arts and crafts with my students to coating items I want to stay permanent. My latest use of ModPodge Outdoor was when I made my own hall passes out of the wooden door hangers you can get at craft stores for less than a dollar. I used ModPodge Outdoor because I knew I would be wiping those down A LOT this school year to prevent germs. My bottle is getting a little empty, though (hint, hint…) 🙂
Ashlee says
I would like to make a Holiday welcome sign.
Alisa says
I think I would make lots of little mod podged bird houses with my B. She loves, loves , loves birds and the homes they reside in, and collage is one her favorite techniques. She just turned six and is super into mod podge already. I have taught her well. 🙂
Belinda says
I would use this for a family name plaque for outside (since I was just married a month ago). =)
Lori m says
I’d love to use it for seasonal holiday door wreaths. Our front is exposed to some pretty nasty weather conditions and with the moisture this would help keep things looking nice all season.
Sylvia says
I would make a House number plaque with our last name on it.
Thats such a great product and would love to try it!

Lindsay says
I like your idea!
Linh C says
I like having signs on my front door or front porch, but that area gets a lot of sun and rain, so my poor signs take a beating. I think the outdoor MP would help a lot.

I wish I would have had this earlier today when I made a scarecrow project, I really wanted to put it outside! This just gives me a reason to go to the craft store tomorrow!
Shoni says
This is way cool – and like many of the “specialty” MP’s, I can’t find it where I live! – and I have a project in mind already for it!
I saw a upcycled jar / fairy light Outdoor Mod Podge craft a while ago on a blog, and would love to make it.
Thank you for the opportunity!

I picked up a nice solid wooden chair from someone’s trash this summer. I have it in my garden, but my winter project will be painting it in bright colors, and I was thinking of finding fabric or scrapbook paper with bugs on & putting them all over the chair. It sounds like this is the perfect product to accomplish this.

WOW do I love Mod Podge, but have never tried this one. What would I do–too many things to list, but probably would start with an ice cream set (table & chairs) that definitely needs so improving. Good project for this winter. Glad to have learned about this product!!!!
Melissa Ziggy Cook says
Well first I’d steal your idea 😉 Then I’d probably tackle the foam pumpkin I got a few years ago that I started doing something with and it was blah. It needs a rehaul badly!
