I found a grody old cheval mirror on the tree lawn a few months back. (OK, maybe it was more like a year!) But I saved it from the trash man and tucked it away. I decided to make a new pinboard for basically FREE.
Want to see how?
Here’s what I started with:
Since it had been out in the weather, I determined that the stand wasn’t really worth saving. And the wood backing was pretty shot too. So I just removed it (it was held on with staples) and gave it a light coat spray paint.
Then I used the wood back as a template to make a new backing out of foam core board, pieced with good old duct tape.
I covered the foam core with some felt to give it extra cushion. A little bit of spray adhesive kept it in place.
Next, I cut my HGTV fabric- I chose to use the large-scale print called Urban Garden- and hot-glued in onto the foam core.
You can cut little darts to make the fabric lie flatter.
Then all I had to do was staple it back into the frame, and add a picture wire.
I cut some scrap pieces of foam core and make little rosettes with some ruffled trim. Easy-peasy!
Ta-Da! All done! And it took me about 2 hours and the cost… almost free! I had everything I needed on hand except the picture wire.
Now it’s hanging in my studio, where I can use it to pin up little handmade cards and tags. Pretty, right?

This is super cute! I love the fabric and I really like the way you re-purposed the mirror. If the previous owners see this post they will be kicking themselves!

This is so useful and easy and a good upcycling project. Which brings me to an upcycling question. I want to upcycle some empty, brown plastic pump shampoo bottles. That famous brand that isn’t shampoo but conditioner? Anway, what is the best adhesive to use to adhere paper and embellishments?
Thanks,
MoB

Mo- first of all, I use that brand too! ; ). Since I don’t know what the end use of the upcycled bottle will be, that’s a hard question to answer. If you are using paper and don’t plan to get it wet, then dry adhesive like Xyron or a spray adhesive will work. If the bottle will get some use, then I might suggest decorating it with adhesive vinyl or even contact paper! Lastly, a product meant for plastics and slick surfaces will work too- like E-6000- but remember it’s a toxic, solvent-based product so use with a fan or open window! Hope this helps, -Jenny
