Yesterday I shared my review and video overview of Scrapbooking Attitude by Avatrex- that whole “printable film” thing is wicked cool! And if you remember, what I was most excited about was not its uses for paper, but for cool substrates like leather, wood, and craft foam. As I was doing my swatch tests, I kind of fell in love with the idea of upcycling one of my older handbags- a boring little brown bag- into something hip and high-end using Scrapbooking Attitude!
I thought maybe I’d share how I did it and perhaps inspire you to save your pennies and transform your accessories!
You’ll need:
- Scrapbooking Attitude Printable Film (two sheets)
- Ink Jet Printer (I used my Epson Stylus Photo R2000) and the ability to flip the image horizontally if it has text
- Glue Stick
- Craft Blade
- Light-colored handbag with a relatively smooth texture.
Apply your gluestick right to the printed image- I didn’t see any smudging or smearing! Make sure you apply it all the way beyond the image.
Now remove the carrier paper- you might need to have a pin handy for this- and place the film glue side down onto the handbag. Smooth the film down with your fingers, working from the center of the image outward to smooth out wrinkles and bubbles.
If you need to trim bits away, a sharp craft knife does the trick. The best part is that when you’ve got it glued down, you’re done! There’s no curing or waiting time. You are ready to go!
I used an “all over” scattered-print pattern on the front:
And a larger version of the print on the back:
I’m thrilled with the way my handbag turned out- it was literally in the “donate” pile ready to go to charity, but now I’m going to carry my purse another season. I love it when a craft project is green and stylish, don’t you?
I’d love to hear your comments on my project or answer any questions you might have. Thanks for stopping by and thank you to Scrapbooking Attitude for sponsoring this post!

I absolutely LOVE what you did with the scrapbooking film. What an incredibly creative, out-of-the-box, and chic idea! Your bag turned out positively stunning. Pinning and sharing with my readers on FB.

This is awesome stuff and I totally want to play with some! Question though: how big do the sheets come? I sort of skimmed the review yesterday but I didn’t see any mention of sizes. I have one of those purses (brand name not mentioned!) that has a changeable outer shell and I think I could probably make a shell with this.
Kaysi @ Keeping It Simple says
I love this!!! What a great idea you had. The purse looks fabulous now!

What a great idea! I have tons of thrift store bags that I snatched up for cutting with Sizzix. Now I have a new plan for a couple of them. Thanks for sharing.
Jenny says
Caryn- for now, they are only offering 8.5 X 11 inch sheets- but I did see that someone planned a larger project and printed it out using the “poster” function on their software. Then you could piece together larger images.

Brilliant! Going to go look through my purses right now!

I love this idea – and your use on the handbag – brilliant! (And the pattern is still so hot now since the Olympics.) I can’t believe this is done with a glue-stick and innovative substrate. Wow! Great work.
Amy Anderson says
Awesome! I need one of my own – immediately!!
Natalie says
I’m curious how long this will actually last…I can’t see a regular glue stick working very well for this? Update us on this bag please.
Jenny says
Natalie- I’m still carrying this bag 2-5 times per week and it’s holding up very well. There are a few spots that have lifted (corners, naturally) but not so much that I can’t use it daily. It’s more durable than you think!
Elizabeth says
Great idea but…. PLEASE remake it. The Union Jack is uoside down! The picture of the flag with the glue stick is correct. See the diagonal white stripe, the broad side should be down on the right and up on the left. Please please redo it. I know a lot of people don’t know the difference but there is one. (I understand this only reversed because of the process, not intentionally.)
Thank you.
Elizabeth.
