Earlier this summer, Carolina reviewed the new Mod Melts line from Plaid. Almost immediately, we got a comment asking what was the difference between Mod Melts and traditional hot glue sticks.
I took it upon myself to do an extra round of testing- and I’m sharing my results with you today!
Both are extruded from a traditional Hot Glue Gun.
Both exhibit “stringing” as the glue cools. Both are easily trimmed with scissors.
Both react virtually the same way to paint- from top: watercolor, acrylic paint dauber, mist sprays heavy body acrylic paint, acrylics thinned with water.
Before I give you my big difference….well, watch the video! (It’s only 3 minutes long, so take a peek.)
So there it is…practically identical in every way except for the opaque white color.
Now we know!
Any questions, comments? I’d love to hear from you!
UPDATE 6/14: They now have many more colors and versions of Mod Melts. Please read our review of Mod Melts: Neons and Metallics here.

thanks, good to know. I have not tried the mod melts, but have used the hot glue to make freehand shapes and have found that Viva Decor 3D stamp paints are great to color the hot glue and resin pieces – thanks for the video, helps a lot.

yay! I have been looking for something to put into the molds besides expensuve resin. Thanks for the demo. You answered all my questions.

Thanks for the demo. I never thought about molding hot glue. Going to have to pull out some silicone molds. And thanks for making me laugh! Keep putting that energy in everything you do!
Amber says
Thank you, this confirms what I thought.

Well done! I kept wondering about that. As you say: Mystery solved!
