Decoden was all over CHA 2014. The crazy “more-is-more”craft originated from Japan and pearls, buttons, game pieces, and toys are embedded into a texture medium on cell phones, picture frames- even SHOES! It’s interesting that I rarely saw it in January when it was all the rage at the tradeshow, but recently I’ve Decoden cell phone cases at retail outlets such as Claire’s Boutique. But I digress!
The point is that if you like to craft and recycle, you’ll find Decoden fun to do and texture medium DecoDen Bling a LOT of fun!
Here is the description from the back of the package:
DecoDen Bling Paste is the easy way to stylize surfaces from phone cases to fabrics to fingernails. Whether you spread it o pipe it like icing through the available decorating tips, DecoDen Bling is an embellishment by itself. It bonds to a wide variety of surfaces like plastic, glass, wood paper and more. Because of it’s depth, it holds bulky items like rhinestones, pearls, and buttons, but also bonds glitter and can even be pained! Stylize your world with DecoDen Bling!
Let’s take a look.
It’s a textural, white and opaque paste packaged in a pouch- you remove the white cap and it’s ready to go. No mixing or kneading necessary.
You squeeze it out of the pouch directly onto the surface. The package says there are available decorator tips (think like for frosting!) but I couldn’t find any at the three stores I went to that fit!! Grr. It would have been so fun to “pipe” it. Oh, well.
You can see just how thick and dimensional the paste is- and it stays white, opaque, and textural when dry. I observed no measurable shrinking.
You can also spread it with a palette knife and create textures with whatever you have on hand. Forks work for me!
I embedded some objects into the DecoDen and let them dry overnight.
I also sprayed the wet DecoDen with a water-based spray mist and found that it didn’t change the DecoDen Bling paste. You can also mist it or color it once it’s dry- which I’ll show you on this video:
As you can see, DecoDen Bling paste is very textural, flexible, and is easy to paint or tint. My only wish is that the neck of the pouch fit the standard decorating tips that I found in the grocery store.
As of this writing, I haven’t found it to be available yet online- but I have emailed the company, SignatureCrafts.com, for more information. If you’d like this product to be more widely available, drop them a line at info(at)SignatureCrafts(dot)com and let them know!
So- what are your thoughts? Would you try Decoden yourself? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Looks like fun…It would work great to cover a small wooden box or frame with seashells too!

I think it looks like great fun and would like to try it with my middle school girls. Is it easy to clean off your hands and relatively non toxic? I also think it would be pretty with shells and also for bits and pieces of junk jewelry and bling on a small frame or box.

I have never heard of this Deco Den before but I am definitely interested in trying it out! I can already think of hundreds of things I would like to try it on….it kind of reminds me of the super heavy modeling paste from Liquitex. Please let me know when it is available in stores or on line. Thanks!
