Around this time of year, folks are looking for nice stocking-stuffer gifts for the crafty person in their life. I thought this would be a perfect time to take a good look at the Martha Stewart Utility Bone Folder by EK Success Brands. It’s a multi-function tool with a sweet price point from a name that has a very good reputation in the crafting industry. So let’s take a look!
It’s described on the website:
This multifunctional bone folder does much more than just fold. It also trims, embosses, and pierces beautiful designs into your paper crafts. There are even tweezers stored in the back for working with small embellishments. MSRP: $13.95
So, I was really excited to give it a whirl. I love the that it has so many functions:
- scoring edge
- burnishing edge
- retractable craft knife (with extra blades)
- piercing tool
- embossing stylus
- tweezers
Here’s how it looks all taken apart:
The retractable craft knife is at one end, the tweezers stored in another. The genius is that the piercing tool and embossing stylus are a combined in a twin-tipped component housed in the middle of the tool. To access it, you twist the tool a quarter-turn and pull. To swap the tips, you just pull it out and flip it over.
Here’s a video overview:
As I you saw in the video, if you are using the awl with a particularly thick material- like craft foam- your point may actually disengage from the handle. It’s not a deal-breaker, but if you are doing heavy-duty piercing, this might not be the best tool for the job. I found the craft blade and embossing stylus to be very serviceable and great for daily, light-weight use.
I’m certainly using it think it would make a great under-$15 craft tool. What are your thoughts?
