Sencils are the new stickers. For the longest time, stencils were boring, dated, and passe. But recently, new, improved, and totally hip stencils have been hitting the market. I was lucky that iStencils.com contacted me to try out their line- they are SO cool!
Here’s a little bit about iStencils from the website:
We have one of the largest online selections of stencils for home decor, custom clothing and more, including many different wall stencils, letter stencils, graffiti stencils and airbrush stencils.
iStencils is a collection of select artworks of different artists from all over the world. Every iStencils stencil is masterfully laser cut from the highest quality materials by the friendly folks at stencilsonline.com, for user friendly, hassle free stencils that anyone can use. Most of our stencils are made from durable (yet highly flexible) 7 mil Mylar which is strong enough to use again and again, but thin enough to achieve incredible detail wherever you choose to stencil. All of our stencils are reusable and easy to clean, and with proper care, your stencils will last a lifetime.
I found that the stencils were a little thicker than some of the others on the market- they feel really substantial. I also noticed that there is a detail on the corners- each one as a different design that you can use.
I also received multiple sizes of their stencils-I’ve never SEEN so many size option! For example, it received a 5X5 inch version of this stencil.
Now look at how many sizes it comes in!
The “add $$” in brackets refers to adding that cost to the base price of the smallest one, which was $4.99 USD. Note that you can get a stencil that is 36 inches square- so you can stencil a whole yard of fabric! Wow!
Of course, I had to play with the stencils. One inky, messy, afternoon later….
And then I got this idea- to use crayons and make RUBBINGS! I got so excited that I made a little video to demonstrate.
I think that the rubbings work really well because iStencils are a little thicker, and therefore have a better surface to use as a texture surface.
Here’s a tag I made, too:
To be honest, I could have played ALL DAY. And the designs are fun, hip, and great for all you mixed-media backgrounds. There is one they sent that I can’t wait to use on fabric and make an art quilt.
As noted above, the base price is $4.99 USD for the smallest size. Considering how often- and with so many different materials- you can use these stencils with, I think it’s a fair price. I love the smaller 5X5 format- and the animal prints alone are making me drool!
So now it’s time to disclose- I got samples for review AND iStencils has become an advertising partner for CTD. But my opinions are honest and my own- I wouldn’t say I liked them if I didn’t. And frankly, I would refuse advertising to any product that I felt was sub-standard. So there it is.
Now, because they are a really great company, they are offering CraftTestDummies readers a special discount code so you can try them for yourself! Just enter code craftfan at checkout- but don’t wait too long- the code will expire on 6/15/12.
