Spray mists and inks have been really hot in the scrapbooking and mixed-media world for a few years now, and if what I saw at CHA last summer is any indication there is no sense of it cooling down anytime soon. One of the new spray inks/ mists I saw was Plain Jane Simply Sheer Mist from Tattered Angels.
Like the name implies, Plain Jane Simply Sheer Mist is a spray watercolor mist with no shimmer or glimmer particles. It’s just like if you’d added a few drops of concentrated watercolors (think Dr PH Martin’s) to water and then put it in a spray bottle. Now just make the color palette true to Tattered Angels and that’s Plain Jane Simply Sheer Mist!
Here’s how it’s described on the website:
Simply Sheer is Glimmer Mist without the Glimmer!! We thought the name Plain Jane was so appropriate. This long-awaited spin off still has the quick and easy spray that delivers a fine mist of color to make all of your projects come alive with color. The exact same formula and Glimmer Mist, they mix and match perfectly and the same techniques apply.
Recommended surfaces include: wood, paper, chipboard, hair, fabric, non-gesso’d canvas, vellum, plastic, acrylic painted surfaces, lace, ribbon, and hair.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a CraftTestDummies review if we didn’t do a swatch test- so here’s the three colors I got (Shade, Soft Green, and Dark Purple) on some different papers and canvases.
From the left: white sticky-back canvas (not gesso’d), blue cardstock, patterned text-weight paper, kraft paper.
As you can see, Simply Sheer is completely translucent without a hint of opacity. That means that the darker the background, the less impact the mists will have. For example, the “Shade” color barely shows up on the kraft paper and not at all on the black samples I tried.
Let’s play with how water-fast it is. For this test, I misted a piece of white construction paper, and let it dry.
Then I took a wet paintbrush and swiped it over the dried misted areas.
You can see that the Dark Purple- the most highly pigmented mist- ran quite a bit. Actually, they all did, but it’s just harder to see with the lighter colors. What this means to you, dear crafter, is that you want to make sure that you don’t want you projects to come into contact with water (of course) and you won’t be able to add a layer of anything that is water based without serious bleeding (think Mod Podge, Diamond Glaze, etc.) It’s important to note that this product will also not be permanent on non-porous surfaces (it will wipe away on primed gesso or plastic, for example) and it will easily wash out of fabric. So keep that in mind, okay?
If you like the play with water to get fun effects though, this is great for you!
I love the sheer mists- I laid down a layer of “Shade” to create a skyline for a future card.
And I made some cards in preparation for World Cardmaking Day on October 6th. (These are bound for Operation Write Home.)
If you already love spray mists, you will certainly love Plain Jane Simply Sheer Mist! (By the way, I only had 3 colors to play with, but you can see all the color swatches here.
I see them online for around $6.99 USD for a 2 ounce bottle- but as with most spray mists, a little goes a long way.
I’d love to hear your opinion of Plain Jane Simply Sheer Mists- do you like spray mists without the glimmer? Leave your comments below!
