Craft Product Review: Faber-Castell Mixed-Media & Collage Kit

This is an exciting time for crafters- products that were almost unheard of a few years ago are now common for paper crafters. (Gesso, anyone?) And almost EVERYONE is really making “mixed media” art now, combining different materials and techniques for everything from card-making to scrapbooking to canvas art.

If you are interested in dipping your toes into the mixed media waters, then the Faber-Castell Mixed Media and Collage Kit is a great way to get started without breaking the bank. For under $25.00 USD, you can dabble with Gesso, collage techniques, watercolor media, and stamping! But let me take a step back and show you what’s in the kit.

It all comes in a nice, sturdy re-usable box, too.

Includes: 12 fully illustrated instruction cards, pencil sharpener, 3 ART GRIP aquarelle pencils, 1 PITT artist brush pen, 1 fine-line Pitt pen, Jar of Gesso, White craft glue, 20 Sheets assorted design paper, 7 greyboard surfaces, foam brush, 1 rubber stamp,1 gelato, plastic screen, lace.

You’ll notice that there are some instruction cards. They give you a basic run-down of the product in the kit, as well as how to use them. There are also some “tutorial” cards, which are more of a step-by-step guide on how to make collages.

I dug into the kit and started playing. I have to say, there are only SAMPLES of  glue and Gesso. I had enough of the gesso for several tags, but not near enough glue. Make sure you have your white glue handy!

I used one of the technique cards and made a tag.

I dug into my stash, as the project card suggested, to add to my piece. However, the paper included was really cool and will go a long way. Since I’m working on a tag swap, I continued on making these two tags- again, using the technique cards.

I had so much fun I didn’t want to go down for dinner. I could have kept making mixed-media art tags all night. You’ll run out of glue and gesso before you run out of ideas.

This would be a great kit for folks wanting to get started, folks who are looking for some ideas to “kickstart” the creativity, or for tween/teens that might want to try some “real” art supplies. For the price point, it’s well worth it!

I don’t know anyone personally doing mixed media. In fact, all the crafters I know don’t even know about online ordering. But they find supplies here and there and are quite happy doing what they do with paper.

I have been interested in learning mixed media and this kit looks awesome. I’ll have to be on the lookout for it. Thanks for the review! :] I love getting to “see” inside something before buying it.

You did an awesome job on your tags. I’ve orders some stuff from Amazon – the gel sticks and love them!
