This may come as a surprise to you but… I’m not much of a doodler. I think I was, when I was younger, but somewhere along the line I lost my doodle. I’ve been thinking about how I might get it back. It seems that it would fit so well with some of the things I’m creating lately and I adore the doodles of other artists I see but I’ve been holding back.
When I saw this book recently I knew I had to have it. The description on the cover says “Inspiring exercises, prompts, and projects for turning simple doodles into beautiful works of art.” It sounded like the perfect chance to find my doodle.
The book starts out with some basic, repeat designs to get you started. Stephanie encourages you to practice right in the white space in the book. Just copy what she’s done to get your doodle juices flowing.
And there are plenty of white pages in the book to fill with your doodles too.
There are so many prompts and exercises to get you going. Some of them very imaginative.
Here are some other things about the book that you might like to know:
- 143 pages
- Paper back
- Lots of doodles and blank space to practice as well as photos & step out instructions for projects
- Includes several projects in the back – things to make with your doodles
- The MSRP is $19.95USD and is available at amazon.com for $13.57USD
In true Vicki fashion I opened to a page right smack in the middle of the book (no starting at the beginning for me!) and decided to just JUMP IN.
Hmmm. That wasn’t so hard. In fact, it was fun.
I didn’t sketch in the book but used a left over bit of watercolor paper from another project because 1) I’ve had it DRILLED into my head since I was a toddler to never, ever write in a book and I still can’t do it and 2) I LOVE watercolor paper.
So now what?
I made a doodled gift tag just like in the book except that instead of a punch I used my Sizzix Big Kick and this die. Awesome!
The nice thing about going through this book is that once you’ve become more comfortable with doodling you can continue on and find out what YOUR doodle style is and create your own unique doodles for your own unique artwork.
