Book Review: The Impatient Beader Gets Inspired by Margot Potter

Margot Potter is one of those crafty rock star personalities who are big on personality AND talent. I met her at the Summer CHA Show in July of last year (2010) when she was promoting her newest book (which I’m sure to be reviewing in the not to distant future!)

The first couple of pages talk about beading tools and supplies. This section gives you a rundown of some of the kinds of beads that are available as well as tools, adhesives and small gadgets used to create some of the projects in the book.

The next few pages go on to give you lots of great ideas for jump starting your creativity. Even experienced creators get bogged down every now and again and some of Margot’s ideas are good for getting us unstuck.

And after a few pages of beading basics the projects begin!

There are projects for everyone, no matter what your skill level. Margot breaks them down into skill levels that she calls “Crafty Virgin” , “Crafty Vixen”, and “Crafty Goddess”. You’re sure to find plenty of projects just for you and just in case you’d like to try something new she gives you plenty of photos and step by step instructions for all of the projects.

I had a hard time deciding what project I wanted to try from the book. You know I always have to make SOMETHING! But as I was cleaning out my van one day early this week I found my old, beat up Atlas and inspiration struck!

Margot has a project on page 110 that really caught my eye. It involves paper and clear resin stickers. But what paper? Hmmmm. And that is where the jewelry project and the beat up Atlas got together and came out a pair of  “I’m from Ohio” earrings.

The directions were super easy to follow and the step by step photos make it pretty much fool proof. Plus, it literally took 8 minutes to make this pair of earrings – and that includes time SEARCHING for earring wires! Can’t beat that!

And the bonus of this project is that I had NO IDEA that my Beadalon Bead Reamer would drill through those resin stickers and paper. Oh the possibilities!

The majority of the projects in this book are suited for beginning to intermediate level jewelry makers but there is plenty of inspiration for even advanced jewelry makers. Margot has several projects in this book that will stretch your imagination and inspire you to try something you haven’t tried before.
