Who remembers the original Shrinky Dinks?

Ahhh the ’70′s.

Just so ya know I didn’t have the Glow in the Dark Shrinky Dinks.

Lame. I know.

And yes, I realize that I’m showing my age when I remember the ’70′s so darn well.

From the back of the book:

“Popular with kids for decades, shrink plastic is back and all grown up as an exciting trend in jewelry making.”

And

“Shrink! Shrank! Shrunk! provides all kinds of creative jewelry from shrink plastic that everyone will enjoy making and sharing!”

-Betty J. Morris, Inventor of Shrinky Dinks

No images from the 1970′s in this book though. Shrink plastic has grown up. All of the designs are current, on trend and perfect for more grown up projects.

Even though I liked almost every project in the book I was really taken with this Russian Doll set.

Not only are they colorful – and you know how much I like color – but they use a shrink plastic that can go through your inkjet printer.

I know, right?

No drawing, no coloring, no mistakes. Print, Cut, shrink and assemble. It really doesn’t get much easier than that.

You can’t go wrong on any of the projects, really, with the great step by step instructions.

But you know me by now, right?

I have to take the ideas and the instructions and do my own thing.

Because a good craft book doesn’t only offer instruction and patterns to FOLLOW but it leaves you inspired to branch out and try your own thing.

How to Make a Victorian Farmhouse Inspired Shrink Plastic Necklace

And this, boys and girls, is my own thing. I used pages from an extremely old and crumbling children’s book I’ve had on hand for ages to create this necklace using the inkjet printable shrink film.

I LOVE it! To me it has a Victorian farm house feel to it. If you want to learn more of the step-by-step process involved in making the necklace, a supply list, as well as the images to print FOR FREE you can visit The Creative Goddess blog How to Make a Victorian Farmhouse Inspired Shrink Plastic Necklace.

See? I share. :)

This is a very fun book and one I highly recommend. Even if you don’t make any of the projects EXACTLY as they are in the book you are sure to come away with LOTS of inspiration and knowledge to create your own projects.

ooohhhhh! I LOVE my shrink film though I don’t use it as much as I should. Definitely checking out your blog Vicki, like I wouldn’t anyway! Please! ;) Then I think I’ll head to amazon and check THAT out.

I LOVED my Shrinky Dinks. When I went looking for them in college just for fun, I was really disappointed that they were no longer being made. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when they started making shrink film for adult crafting purposes! My brother bought my youngest a Shrinky Dink set last Christmas so now my kids know how much fun it is. And the best part is we no longer have to fire up the oven like I did when I was a kid, it shrinks under a heat tool! I really love the idea of using it for charms and embellishments, and especially for jewelry making. This book looks like a great resource for that.
