Inspired Remnants, Curious Dreams Mixed-Media Projects in Epoxy Clay by Kerin Gale is a book that features Epoxy Clay, as you may have guessed. I have to tell you, when I received the Apoxie Sculpt Epoxy Clay (read the full review of that product by clicking the link) from Jenny along with the book. I was a little intimidated so I put the book on my “To Review” shelf.
Finally, I pulled it down this week and decided that I was going to see what it was all about. And I’m glad I did. I had a great time making the project I made as a result of this book review. But first more about the book.
As you can see the book has a good sized section that teaches the reader about the clay, molds, tools, and finishes among other things. And then it gets down to the fun stuff. Project making!
Curious Dreams features lots of step out photos for each project as well as a photo of the finished piece. The only thing that disappoints me a little is that the photos of the finished project are rather dark. I understand that it’s part of the “mood” of the pieces but I would have loved to have had a brighter, easier to see, detail photo included for reference as well as the “moody” photos.
Here are some other things to know about Inspired Remnants, Curious Dreams by Kerin Gale:
- 126 pages
- Includes instructions for using the epoxy clay with enough information to help those who are unfamiliar with the product
- A Resources page
- Features “From the Gallery” photos throughout the book of projects made by other artists
- The MSRP is $24.99USD and is available at amazon.com for $10.00USD
The project that inspired me was the Vintage Gentleman and the section in the beginning “Creating a Faux Aged Finish”. Of course you know I didn’t make a project just like the instructions, I had to blaze my own trail and combine a couple of ideas, but I did feel comfortable enough to do that after reading the first part of the book that explained the processes and the products. The author does a good job of explaining things in a way I understood right away.
And here is what I came up with. There is a whole story about what it is and where it came from that you’ll have to visit The Creative Goddess post to read about but this is my finished necklace. At least I THINK it’s finished. I may have to work on it some more.
I used the technique on page 19 of Curious Dreams for the most part. Can you believe that with all of the alcohol ink I have I didn’t have “Espresso”? I’m really happy with the way the epoxy clay looks like metal. Like the piece I started out with. Only much lighter because it’s not cast iron!
Anyway, if you are looking for some new mixed media techniques or jewelry making supplies this book might be what you are looking for. Be prepared to become totally addicted to making molds and creating with epoxy clay.
Don’t say I didn’t warn you! 🙂
