So I’ve been visiting Martha Stewart’s Craft of the Day site, and today’s “Shirt Sack” I thought was worth sharing! Basically you take a man’s shirt and stitch in into a little backpack. True, it’s not a heavy-duty rucksack, but it would be a cute little tote. Here are my ideas for them:
- Add an iron-on applique or an initial to dress it up.
- Make it more “boy” appropriate by using a flannel shirt.
- Whip up a bunch of these, and fill them with an inexpensive coloring book, small pack of crayons, pencil, notepad, etc, and donate them to your local Red Cross, Fire Department, or homeless shelter for kids in crisis. Sometimes a small gift- and something to do- can help kids through a traumatic event.
- Make a keepsake. Often, when a grandparent or other loved one passes, the younger kids can’t process the death. Use the deceased’s shirts to make a keepsake tote, and put in some pictures of them together. It could ease their loss, and give them something special to remember Grandpa/Dad/Uncle by. (And it makes it easier for the survivors to use those shirts for something productive, rather than donating them to some charity or tossing them.)
I’m going to mention this idea to my quilt guild, and see if we can use it as a community service project!
