I’m a fashion and craft blogger and I love staying on top of color trends for the various things that I make. Pantone’s Spring 2015 color story is “En Plein Air”, playing off of nature and calmness. There is a nice mix of cool, warm, and neutral colors that can be used together.
The women’s colors are inspired by tropical waters, and delicious spring treats. The cool colors are Aquamarine, Scuba Blue, Lucite Green, and Classic Blue. These colors are influenced by beautiful waters, vintage materials, and classics. All things evocative of pleasant Spring weather, distant paradises, and luxury. The warm colors are Strawberry Ice, Tangerine, Custard, and Marsala. These are named for sweet fruits, desserts and wine, all delicious things for Spring. The neutrals, Toasted Almond and Glacier Grey, are warm tones. Though these are considered the neutrals, both Classic Blue and Marsala are great grounding colors. You can use the neutrals and grounding colors as a base to make the other colors stand out better, allowing a pop of color without the harshness of black or white.
The men’s colors have an earthier feel to them. Dusk Blue, Treetop, Woodbrine, Sandstone, Titanium, and Lavender Herb, are colors found in the lushness of Spring nature. These remind me of hiking trails, camping, and adventures to be had. Overlapping the women’s collection, Toasted Almond, Marsala, Glacier Grey, and Aquamarine are included. These help bridge the two color groups.
Here are some color combos I like, which would be great for clothing and crafting.
This combo of Scuba Blue, Lucite Green, Strawberry Ice, and Tangerine, make me want to lay by a tropical beach with lots of frozen drinks and sorbet.
For a vintage Americana feel, combine Classic Blue, Marsala, Glacier Gray, and Toasted Almond. They are great for classic country looks as the colors and neutrals are muted with a dusty warm tone. Long term, they would be great for Independence Day and historical enrichment trips scrapbook pages.
For more masculine and autumnal designs, combine Marsala, Treetop, Titanium, and Sandstone. These are deeper color with an aged feel to them. They remind me of lodges, autumn leaves, and rich earth. Oddly enough, this is close to the color palette my house is decorated in. This palette shows that though the new Pantone colors are designated for Spring 2015, they can be incorporated into the current season and related crafts.
Though Pantone’s presentation had sketches from fashion designers, the seasonal colorstories are used in beauty, interior and craft design too. Scrapbooking, sewing, knitting, jewelry, glass, ceramics, crochet, housewares, and clothing can all share the same color palette and have varying beautiful results. I love using on trend colors in my designs, so I can stay fashion forwards and expand my color preferences. Personally, I’m drawn to the blues and greens, and darker tones as they fit better into my wardrobe and house than the brighter warm colors.
I’m interested to see how other designers incorporate these new Pantone colors into their work. How would YOU use these color palettes?
