If you have children in your house between the ages of 5 and 15, you already know about the bracelet loom phenomenon. It’s the craft using rubber band loops and a plastic loom to create different designs that you can turn in to bracelets (or necklaces, for that matter.) The kind folks at Toys R Us and Cra-Z-Art graciously sent one for my “junior assistants” to try out!
Here’s how it’s described on the website:
The simple loop, weave and wear design lets you create unique bracelets, necklaces, rings and more! Make longer or wider designs by placing two or more looms front to back or side to side (additional looms sold separately). Containing 600 latex-free rubber bands of assorted colors, the Cra-Z-loom Bracelet Maker comes with the “S” hooks special weaving hook tool and an instruction booklet that uses step-by-step illustrations and photos to help you create simple to more advanced rubber band jewelry!

As you can see, the loom is plastic and sturdy and has little tabs that keep the elastic bands from popping off!
This brand also has offsett pegs, which allow for some fun complex designs!
I basically turned it over to my 8-year old daughter who disappeared with it and left a trail of loops in her wake! She loved making the basic bracelet so much that she mass-produced them for all her friends. Sadly, I couldn’t get her interested in anything more complex- but I figure that’s OK because she was able to create and enjoy herself- and when she’s ready, she can watch some YouTube videos and try more complex designs.
Now, one thing- my daughter lost the hook almost immediately- but no worries, a crochet hook will fill in nicely. She made a “fishtail bracelet (the one on the left) and a traditional one on the right. She used these s-hooks to close some of her bracelets. But we also found that you can use aluminum jump rings for a fun look, too:
The looms are fairly inexpensive- under $15.00- and the refill loops vary. It’s a fun, easy way to get your kids creating, making their own gifts, and getting creative!
I think it’s a sure-fire winner for a holiday gift, too.
How about you? Do you have/know kids on the loom-bracelet kick?

I bought a similar product for my granddaughter with extra rubber bands. She loved it so much that she already need refills of her rubber bands. It would be a great Christmas or birthday present for any young girls. Bella is 10.
