I love that watercoloring has really taken off in the crafting and mixed-media world lately. Now we have a new way to watercolor- with powdered watercolor from Ken Oliver Crafts.
Here’s how it’s described:
Sprinkle and spritz! Color Burst is an amazing concentrated microfine watercolor powder that lets you create beautiful watercolor techniques like never before! This versatile powder can be used with so many fun techniques!
Spritz your project with water and sprinkle on Color Burst and create amazing designs.
Sprinkle Color Burst on dry paper and then spritz with water for a completely different look.
Dissolve in water and spray from a mister bottle to create your own custom mists.
The possibilities are endless!
Each bottle contains 6g of microfine watercolor powder.
For use on porous surfaces, non toxic and acid free.
For this product, I made you a video review because it looks like NOTHING in pictures- just powder. You HAVE to see it in action!
And here is a still of that pretty paper!
I’m planning to experiment some more- but I’d love to hear your thoughts, too!

These powders are similar to Brushos from the UK. I have a set of 24 colors in little pots. The only difference is that the ones you’re reviewing are in containers that poof the powder…the Brushos are in closed containers that you pierce with a needle-tool or even a nail so that small amounts can be shaken (shook?) out. I like the poof opportunity, but perhaps there is more control with the Brushos. Thanks for some great pointers. Love your videos.
I’ve seen some other projects done with a different brand of these- Brusho. Regardles of which brand, projects made with this type of product look amazing.
I am totally addicted to these awesome powders! I have fallen in love with watercoloring the last few months and these certainly make it even more fun!! I love playing around with them and seeing what the final result is!! TFS!
I didn’t see anything that couldn’t be done with ordinary watercolours, with a lot less mess and a lot more colours to choose from.
I have them and have used them and NOW I get why when I cleaned my work surface there was strong color coming from nowhere. DUH! I think I will use a color box next time. BTW, I do love them. ML
What if you tried wetting the paper in a design and then adding the puffs of dry paint?
I have used these and I made the same mistake that you are making, I squeezed the bottle and had it all over than I got smart. If you open the bottle and just face the opening towards your project and just tap lightly on the bottom of the bottle, you won’t get so much on the paper or in the air. Works great that way.
Can this process be used on wood. I do some scroll sawing making name plaques for the grand kids. I wonder if this technique could be used on some wood and then top-coated with spray lacquer or polyurethane for a little added protection.
I have. You have to get the paper REALLY WET and the watercolor paper just soaks the water right up. So I didn’t love it as much.
I don’t think it would work the same. The grain of the wood would mean that the watercolors wouldn’t absorb the in a random fashion. Now if you sealed the wood first (and probably primed it, so the colors would be true, perhaps….and then you’d have to spray seal that as well.) Good luck!
What is the difference between these powders and Twinkling H2O’s?
I haven’t gotten too much into the watercolor products due to price.
While I am truly in love with my Chameleon markers, there are times I would like a softer look to images.
But there are so many products out these days, it can make a girl’s head spin!!
Is there anywhere on your site I can search for this information?
Thank you
