I actually purchased this book a several months ago, brought it home and put it on a shelf to read later. Something about writing book reviews for Craft Test Dummies and National Sewing Month got me to pull it off the shelf to dig through it. Boy, I’m glad I did. Because I finally got motivated to work a project that’s been swimming around in my brain for probably a year or two. But I’ll tell you more about that later. First, about the book.
Stats:
- Soft Cover
- 144 pages cover to cover
- Starts with a 30 pages that include an introduction, The Never Ending World of Fabric and Crafty Chica’s Artful Stitching 4-1-1.
- The remaining chapters are organized by Power Purses, Wonderous Wearables and Embrace Your Space
- The back portion of the book includes templates, resources and an index
- The MSRP is 21.95 USD but can be purchased at amazon.com here for $16.13 USD
The book is generally geared toward the beginning sewer with lots of basic information about sewing machines and all of its various parts as well as a page or two about reasons to sew. Just in case you need a little motivational boost!
Kathy includes lots of personal stories in the book along with the little red boxes (shown above) called “Stitch in Time” where she tells stories from other sewers and their past experiences with sewing. A few of them are hilarious and they help you to realize that even some of the crafting “celebrities” have stories about learning to sew that are less than glamorous.
Crafty Chica’s Guide To Artful Sewing is full of bright colors and photographs. Just what you’d expect!
The project in the book that got my attention most was the Crafty Superstar Jacket (though there is a T-shirt scarf I’m going to have to try out as well). I had purchased a denim jacket several years back that had an applique on it that is really out of date and I’ve been wanting to re-work it.
See what I mean? OUT. DATED. So I took my trusty seam ripper and a hot iron (it had been ironed on and then stitched around the edges) I removed the roses and got to work dressing it up MY way.
And here is what I’ve got so far. This is going to be a work in process, I think, as I gather things that will go with the color scheme and my sort of “free spirited” start. So far I like what I’ve got going on.
