Allium Dried Flower “Fireworks” Patriotic Centerpiece

June 27, 2012

Make a "fireworks" centerpiece for Independence Day, Patriot's Day or Veterans day using dried flowers!

Need a quick patriotic centerpiece? I made one with dried flowers- alliums- in only 15 minutes! You can bring the look of fireworks to your Fourth of July party for pennies using SPRAY PAINT!

A few years ago, we planted some globe allium at our new house. It’s a member of the garlic family- actually, it reminds me of giant chives.

These blooms are HUGE- they are at least 5 inches in diameter. And when the bloom fades, they dry out and look like this:

So… I was looking at them. And they looked like fireworks to me!

Each stem is like a little explosion!

So then I got a bright idea. I took some spray paint, spray glitter, and went to town.

Whee!

In only 20 minutes, I had a brand-new patriotic centerpiece for my Fourth Of July party!

Make an economical patriotic centerpiece for your fourth-of-July party with this dried flower craft- and make faux "fireworks!" -From CraftTestDummies.com

I used Krylon H20 Paint and some Glitter Blast, followed by a clear coat to seal on the glitter. (Be aware, that Glitter Blast is tricky stuff- but lawsy, it is sparkly!)

I’m thinking you could do the same idea with dried hydrangeas, maybe. But you can’t beat it for quick and inexpensive- with a lot of POP!

My mother had lots of alliums when I was growing up-zillions of years ago. We did this all the time when we were kids. It was so much fun. We also stopped by the roads whenever we saw puff balls (as we called them)that were weeds. They would blow apart in a second if you touched them,so we always took a can of hairspray with us in the car and when we saw them and sprayed them a couple of times and brought them home to paint.

I like the way you think. What a genius! Wish we had these locally. I don’t think I’ve seen them in Florida near me.

This is a beautiful centerpiece. I’ll look for this plant for next year so I can copy your design. Thanks for sharing!
